Fifteen hours in the car today. Covered 760 miles and three capitols to show for it. Started at 4:00AM and got to Salem, OR quickly. The capitol is under construction, but very accessible. Here is the best picture I could get in low light.
Wanted to recognize one of the best sugar highs on the West Coast – VooDoo Doughnuts. Flew through Portland, but could not forget the “worst” best doughnut I have ever eaten. Possibly the worst thing you could put in your body, but that is what makes it soooo good. Luckily, there is a VooDoo in Austin, so I can get the best.
Drove to Sacramento and the journey took an eerie course through smoke from the Reading fire. There were fires still burning about 20 miles north of Reading and I-5 is clouded in smoke for over 100 miles. The trip had been cool and a little rainy in Oregon, but that changed abruptly when we hit the fire areas. Temps went up and the car warmed up quickly without AC. I didn’t want to open the windows. The heat won and the windows went open and I smell like I sat too close to a campfire. The picture below is Mt. Shasta in the smoke haze. Believe me when I say the mountain is there just right of center.
On to Sacramento and the California Capitol.
Thought I could stay just outside Sacramento, but everything is booked, so off to Carson City and a very difficult Capitol Building to capture.
Had to change the air filter in Carson City because of the ash and soot from the fires in California. It had gone 15,000 miles, so that wasn’t too bad.
